RM Auctions completed another outstanding sale at its 20th annual Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction totaling $31 million and topping all other auction events.

The 2005 auction event held August 19-20, 2005 at the Portola Plaza Hotel in Monterey, CA, was the largest single offering in the history of the famed Monterey weekend and a new world record for a two-day auction of vintage automobiles. The sale saw an outstanding 91 percent of cars sold and included seven cars that sold for more than $1 million apiece.

Headlining the auction was a stunning 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C Lago Speciale Teardrop Coupe that sold for $3,685,000. The one-off car had spent its entire life in Europe making its first North American appearance on the RM auction block. The Teardrop Coupe, named for the seductive shape of the cars pillarless windows and sculptured body, is recognized as the pinnacle of French Art Deco design.

Excitement also built around the North American debut of the super-luxury 2006 Maybach 57 S which was driven on stage by Tonight Show host Jay Leno and a surprise hitchhiker – the legendary racer Sir Stirling Moss and sold for $550,000 to a Texas collector. With encouragement from Leno and a special appearance by Ulrich Maybach, great-grandson of founder Wilheim Maybach, charitable proceeds from the Maybach 57 S and the generosity of RM's clients raised a total of $427,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of America.

Joining the Talbot-Lago in the million dollar plus category were six other incredible automobiles:

1964 Ford GT40 Prototype the actual car that won the 1965 Daytona Continental Race, driven by Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby, splendid in its 1966 racing livery. ($2,502,500)

1932 Alfa Romeo P3 Tipo B Monoposto one of three remaining examples out of 6, this ex-Scuderia team car won the 1934 Monaco Grands Prix in additions to finishes at Monza, Nurburgring and Rheims ($2,100,000)

1970 Ferrari 512S Spyder Sports Racing Car – 550bhp, 4,496cc dual overhead cam V12 made this the fastest car Ferrari had ever built to date, capable of 235mph plus ($1,947,000)

1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta a Scaglietti-bodied, Pinin Farina design was the last Tour de France built with a storied racing provenance. ($1,457,500)

1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder Known to collectors as one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever built, it is as graceful standing still as it is at top speed. ($1,320,000)

1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster – The centerpiece of the 37 Berlin Motor Show, it was the automobile of choice of royalty and international celebrities. ($1,017,500)

Other notable highlights from the two-day RM Monterey auction included:

1951 Ferrari 340 America Berlinetta – this hot rod of sports racing Ferraris and one of only two closed Berlinettas to receive Tourings superlight coachwork. ($973,500)

1971 Porsche 917 Spyder formerly from the famed Harrah Collection and considered to be one of the most desirable of all vintage Porsche racers. Recently restored to its former glory. ($863,500)

1962 Chaparral 1 Sports Racing Car, a revolutionary design by legendary Jim Hall that would dominate its class in the 1960s. One of five built of the original first series. ($577,500)

1964 Shelby 289 Cobra Dragonsnake born into the prime of the drag racing era, this Cobra successfully defended Carroll Shelbys legacy, winning countless events. ($451,000)

949 Jaguar XK120 Roadster Prototype – the first XK120 prototype ever built (Chassis 67001) was the world's fastest production car and launched the Jaguar sports car dynasty. ($440,000)

1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda – the holy grail of muscle cars today. This factory original, with less 30,100 miles was one of only two finished in Autumn Mist Metallic, out of only 108 built. ($412,500)

Todays cars generate 14 per cent of all CO2 emissions in the UK, marginally less than in 2000, despite an increase of 4 million cars on the road according to Energy use and CO2 emissions, the latest motoring facts report from road safety charity the IAM.

While carbon emissions from all forms of road transport continue to rise, the rate from cars fell from 196 grams of CO2 per km in 1997 to 174 grams CO2 per km in 2008. Total UK emissions are forecast to increase but those from cars are set to continue falling.

The report also finds that:

• Peoples perception is that cars and aircraft are the two biggest carbon polluters, when in fact the top two are power stations and industry.
• Since 1997 the overall fuel economy of new cars has improved by a quarter, mostly in the last ten years.
• Average new car fuel consumption for petrol cars fell from 8.28 litres per 100km in 1997 to 6.93 litres per 100km in 2008.
• Households produce as much CO2 as cars.
• The biggest single consumer is the energy generating industry itself when it converts one form or energy into another (for example oil to electricity) and through energy lost in distribution.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: Despite what many green experts may say, Britains drivers and the motoring industry are doing their bit to reduce carbon emissions. Drivers are shifting to greener engines and have embraced incentives like cheaper vehicle excise duty for more fuel efficient models.
Manufacturers should also take credit for producing models across the range that are cleaner and greener. But driving style is crucial – the best fuel-saver is a light right foot and anticipation of the road ahead.
How to improve your MPG and cut carbon emissions:

• Keep your vehicle moving rather than stopping and starting. Look further ahead and slow down earlier to avoid stopping. Driving at a constant speed is far more fuel efficient than heavy accelerating and braking.
• Check your tyres. Under-inflated tyres have a big impact on fuel economy.
• Put your car on a diet. remove unnecessary weight, including roof racks, car clutter and heavy items in the boot.
• Try to avoid using air conditioning and climate control at low speeds as they increase fuel consumption. Open a window.
• However at high speeds, close your windows to maintain the aerodynamics of the car. Use air-con to get the car to a comfortable temperature, and then turn it off to save fuel.
• Clean screens rarely mist up – so youll use the heater and air-conditioning less.
• Try changing up your gears earlier; for petrol engines at 2,500 rpm (revs per minute), and diesel engines 2,000 rpm
• Reverse into parking bays: manoeuvring with a cold engine uses more fuel, so make the most of having a hot engine.
• It will take most cars at least a couple of miles to warm up and run efficiently. Could you walk or cycle?
• Drive at an even pace over speed humps. Slowing down and speeding up drinks more fuel.
• Stick to the speed limit.

The top cars receiving 4 out of a possible 4 leafs included the Tesla Roadster, Nissan Leaf, Honda CR-Z, Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight, smart fortwo, and the Chevrolet Volt. With transportation being responsible for around a third of our carbon footprint, driving a fuel efficient car is an easy way to significantly reduce your environmental impact. Many automakers have made huge strides in making their fleets more fuel efficient and cleaner burning.

The car companies who performed the best overall in the study were Tesla, smart, Mini, Honda, Volkswagen, Kia, and Toyota. Honda was especially notable with 3 of its vehicles receiving the coveted 4-leaf rating from Greenopia, being the only automaker with more than 1 vehicle receiving a 4-leaf score.

One interesting thing about the vehicle marketplace today is that it is becoming increasingly clear which type of alternative fuel each car company is backing, said Gay Browne, Founder of Greenopia. The majority of car companies seem to be backing some form of an electric vehicle, but there are several car companies who are relying on technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells.

Greenopia used a comprehensive set of criteria to determine the car ratings. Data was collected from the EPA and from the auto companies themselves pertaining to the fuel economy, emissions, engine type, and curb weight. Weights were set based off the relative environmental impacts of a passenger vehicle life cycle.

For this years guide, Greenopia also considered vehicle performance while still taking into account environmental efficiency. A new icon (called Eco-Performance) was awarded to highlight more performance-minded cars that also did well environmentally.

Although vehicles with more modest engines are almost always going to be the greenest, certain performance automakers do not get enough credit for how efficient their vehicles are, said Doug Mazeffa, Research Director of Greenopia. While sportier cars typically have dismal fuel economies, some are shockingly efficient. There are numerous vehicles made by the likes of Mercedes, BMW, and Porsche that can get around 30 miles to the gallon.

The Opel-Vauxhall Ampera tied for the first position in the top ten green cars for 2010, with the Nissan LEAF.

Scheduled for release in November 2010 in America, it can travel for up to 40 miles on the electricity stored in its lithium-ion batteries. It then has an internal combustion engine which takes over giving it a range of over 300 miles. It should be available in 2011/12 in Europe.

Driving the Opel/Vauxhall Ampera
The Ampera has an innovative driveline and uses a combination of electricity and combustion energy. It has a 40 miles battery range which will cover the daily driving requirements of 90% of European drivers.

It has a fast enough acceleration and it easy to manoeuvre. However although acceleration is good up to 50mph at higher speeds it is poor. Bear in mind that this review is based on a prototype and improvements can be made in the meantime.

The Opel/Vauxhall Ampera as a Fleet Car
With electric power being the technology of the future it does offer the advantage of a real-world range and performance.

At this relatively early stage the Ampera is still flawed in places and expensive, but as improvements are made moving on from this prototype this will help.

Overall savings will be similar to the Nissan LEAF with running costs being about a fifth of a petrol or diesel equivalent. This means that within about three years you will get back the difference in what you paid for the car and then you will be making huge savings.

If projected figures are right, the Ampera will be one of the greenest cars on UK roads, when it is launched in 2012.

The Government should be offering £5,000 tax incentives and consider making the Ampera exempt from road tax and any congestion charges.

Passengers and Luggage
Although generally quite classy and comfortable, the Ampera falls down a little on luggage space. It will accommodate four adults but with a smaller amount of baggage.
